Decision on Germany's accession to the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO)

On December 20, 2023, the Federal Cabinet decided that Germany will join the Square Kilometer Array Observatory (SKAO). Germany will become the tenth member state of the SKAO as soon as the Bundestag and Bundesrat approve the cabinet decision.

The Square Kilometer Array Observatory (SKAO) will operate radio telescopes at two locations, in South Africa and Australia. The headquarters of the international organization SKAO is in the United Kingdom. To date, the SKAO also includes China, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland as full members and France, Germany, India, Japan, Canada, South Korea and Sweden as observers.
