Working Group for the History of Astronomy
The Working Group for the History of Astronomy has been founded during the Annual Meeting of the Astronomische Gesellschaft (AG), an international society for German-speaking astronomers, at Jena (Germany) on September 14, 1992.
Aims of the working group are:
- Organizing scientific meetings
- Providing information on the history of astronomy by editing publications
- Undertaking joint projects
The working group is open for all who are interested. The membership is independent from that in the AG. There is no annual membership fee, but donations are welcome. The members receive the printed newsletter twice per year.
Meetings of the working group take place in connection with the annual meetings of the AG. Participation is independent of a membership in the working group. Talks and posters cover all aspects of the history of astronomy and some meetings are devoted to special themes.
Since December 1992 the working group is issuing twice per year the Mitteilungen zur Astronomiegeschichte (in German). The "Mitteilungen" contain information on the activities of the working group, news from the field of history of astronomy and related fields, hints towards exhibitions and meetings and newly publishend books.
There are also special issues with bibliographies of members of the group.
A sample copy can be ordered from the secretary of the working group.
In addition to the printed issues of the "Mitteilungen" two electronic versions were distributed from 1994 to 2005:
Elektronische Mitteilungen zur Astronomiegeschichte (in German; opens in new tab) and
Electronic Newsletter for the History of Astronomy.
Those electronic publications were more frequent and more up to date.
Starting in 1998 the working group issues the Acta Historica Astronomiae. More then 60 issues have been published so far which include monographies, proceedings of meetings, and a kind of annual report called "Beiträge zur Astronomiegeschichte" with papers and reviews. The issues are mostly in German, but also issues or articles in English exist.
