At the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics (AIP), 325 years of history meet state-of-the-art research technologies. The institute, rich in tradition, is characterized in particular by its two main research areas ‘Stellar, Solar and Exoplanetary Physics’ and ‘Extragalactic Astrophysics’ as well as the development of indispensable research infrastructure and research technologies. The institute is the successor to the Berlin Observatory founded in 1700 and the Astrophysical Observatory Potsdam founded in 1874. Today it encompasses the Babelsberg institute campus and two historically significant buildings: the Einstein Tower and the Great Refractor on the Telegrafenberg site. Other locations include the LOFAR radio telescope station in Potsdam Bornim, the GREGOR solar telescope and the robotic STELLA telescopes at Tenerife, as well as the Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona. More than 200 people work on the site of the Babelsberg Observatory in a unique environment that combines historic architecture with state-of-the-art technology.
